Just wanted to let you know that I am going to be at the Informex conference at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco Feb 13-16. If anyone else is going to be there and would like to meet up, send me an email and we’ll see about getting together.
For those of you not familiar with Informex it is a big meeting of pharmaceutical contract manufacturers and fine chemicals producers. The big attraction is the networking and ability to meet with a lot of companies in a few days. I go every year to meet with contract manufacturers and see what has changed and who has added new capabilities. it also gives me a chance to catch up with many of my friends in the industry.
Hope to see some folks there!

I should have posted this earlier but I decided to take some time off and relax over the Thanksgiving holiday and not post. I needed some down time and besides, the college basketball season got off to e flying start with several tournaments and it was great to just relax and watch some good college basketball.
I’m working on several posts and will be back on a more regular posting schedule now.
Hope everyone in the US had a Happy Thanksgiving.

I just want to recommend that everyone to vote in tomorrows election. I had a post earlier on some sources for information that I recommend you take a look at.
Also, be aware that if there are problems, please report them. First try your local election official and make them aware of the issue. If that doesn’t work, try calling The Election Incident Reporting System (EIRS) at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (687-8683). Also, if there are major problems then let you local media know. Be sure and make the general public aware of any problems that may occur. Many votes will be cast on electronic system for the first time in a national election. The only way these problems will be addressed is for the public to be made aware of the number and extent of the problems.
Make sure that your choices are EXACTLY the way you want it before hitting the final vote button. Always check to make sure your choices are correctly reflected on the confirmation screen. If you have questions, ask a local offical for help. If you have problems getting your vote to be recorded correctly, let the election official know immediately.
Also note that if you are told there is a problem with you voting, ask for a provisional ballot. This allows you to vote and then get any matter cleaer up within a specific period of time which varies from state to state.
Take advantage of your right to vote and make your voice known.

Voting is an important duty for everyone in the US. I also think people should spend time going over the issues and candidates in order to make an informed choice. With that in mind, I wanted to let you know about what is easily the most important episode of “Searching the Internet” that I have done to date. Episode 12 covers information for voters and I review sites to help you make intelligent decisions in the upcoming election. All the sites reviewed are non-partisan and give unbiased information about the candidates and issues. I’m hopeful that people will find this review of election and voter information related sites useful and helpful.
I feel voting is very important and wanted to contribute something to the podcasting community. I went through many sites before settling on the ones I decided to include. Episode 012 covers election information sites. These include:
I feel voting is the most important duty of any American and I hope this episode helps people make informed decision at the polls on Nov 7.

Just wanted to let you know that I was at the Podcast Expo in Ontario Friday and Saturday last week and then took a couple of days vacation while I was in southern CA. The Podcast Expo was great and I learned a lot and hope to apply what I’ve learned to the Searching the Internet podcast and the website soon.
It was also great to get to meet many people whose podcasts I listened to and who I have communicated with over the past year. It was nice to be able to put names with faces.
I am now back and will be blogging on a regular basis.

Just wanted to let anyone concerned know that I am fine here in Salem OR where four pipes bombs were found yesterday. They were exploded without injury and no one was hurt. None were anywhere near where I live.
• Police Busy With Pipe Bombs In Salem Area
• Bomb Squad Called To Third Location In Salem
• Four pipe bombs found, destroyed in Mid-Valley: Three incidents occur in the Salem area; one in Dallas
• Timeline of events for Aug. 10
This on the same day as the airline bombing plots from Britain made the news. This means that this situation was not widely reported but it was indeed unnerving to have four pipe bombs found all in the same day spread across the city.
Luckily, the hospital called and cancelled my wife’s outpatient treatment or she would have gotten caught in all the confusion.
There are no reported leads at his point so it will be unnerving not knowing if another pipe bomb will turn up.
Here is a list of all the news stories from Google News

Implantable drugs are something I have spent quite a bit of time thinking about for a couple of reasons. This article on the recent approval of Implanon contraceptive (which lasts three years) from Organon got me thinking again.
FDA approves implantable contraceptive - Yahoo! News:
A little background: this of course is not the first implantable contraceptive. Wyeth (formerly American Home Products) had Norplant approved back in 1990 which they stopped selling in 2000 after several lawsuits. Norplant lasted seven years and was implanted in the forearm. Since then, there haven’t been any implantable birth control. Another implantable drug is the Gliadel wafer for brian cancer. This is implanted near a tumor in the brain and was approved in Feb 2003. There may be others but my point is the technology exists and could be used in other areas.
Back to my thoughts on implantable drugs. I spent about five years working on a polymer drug conjugate which, although not implantable (it was delivered by IV) had a lot of similarities to polymer rug released products. I spent a lot of time learning about analytical methods for characterizing polymers in a cGMP environment.
I have also had some experience with schizophrenia; I had my best friend with schizophrenia in graduate school commit suicide by taking potassium cyanide from the chemistry stockroom. I also know a little bit about how depression and other mental illness and their effect people and there families. One of the problems with these sorts of medical problems is that once these people are on the correct drug, their symptoms disappear and they feel much better. In fact, it is not uncommon or them to feel so good, they think they no longer need their drugs. Another problem is CNS drugs have undesirable side effects ranging from headaches, to feeling like your thinking is slow, to sexual problems, and others issues. So there are several reasons people want to go off their medications even though it may indeed be helping.
My though has been to make implantable forms of CNS drugs. Now, I’m the first to admit that there are potential problems with this. What if there are serious side effects? One of the problems with Norplant was not that it didn’t work but that there were complications with trying to get the implant removed and there were also some side effects. My thought was to put patients on an oral form of the drug to see if there are any side effects and then if there are not, the implantable form could be used. This would be especially useful in serious cases of schizophrenia in patients who may be a danger to themselves or others. This would solve the “roller coaster” problem of going on and off drugs causing even more problems. I would say that I also realize that this would not be appropriate in all circumstances and would have to be managed carefully at first. However, the long term pay off should be more than worth it in preventing re-occuring hospitalization of those with serious problems.

Biotech crops seem to be getting a lot of bad press in last few years. One company, Ventria has developed a GM rice that produces two proteins found in breast milk and which could then be extracted and eventually sold as a drug. An application has been filed is not yet approved. The proteins would be used to treat diarrheal illnesses in children in developing countries which kills about 2 million children each year. Here’s an article from the Sacramento Bee on this.
Kansas opens arms to Ventria’s biotech rice - sacbee.com:
The company only has 18 employees and has had resistance in both California and Missouri due to concerns about GMO from other rice farmers in that state. They currently grow the rice in North Carolina and in greenhouses in California. This would allow them to expand their fields into Kansas and so far there hasn’t been local opposition. Also, Kansas has no existing rice crop so the fears of cross contamination are not there.
It should be made clear that this rice is not for human consumption. It will be collected and further processed to extract the proteins.
