Lilly Buyout to Cut All Icos Jobs

by @ 12:51 pm.  Filed under Pharma News

I’ve reported on the Lilly Icos merger previously and although this news is not unexpected it is interesting.

Lilly Buyout to Cut All Icos Jobs | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle:

Lilly will cut all jobs from Icos meaning they basically just bought Icos to avoid the payment of royalties on Cialis. I have a friend who works for Icos and it looks like they will have to be looking for a new job in the New Year. Some in the manufacturing group will be kept on through 2007 to meet commitments to other companies for making their product.

      Eli Lilly Zyprexa scandal

Zyprexa off label promotion scandal is all over the news now.
Lilly drug reps are alleged to have called their marketing ploy,”Viva zyprexa”.

Eli Lilly zyprexa cost me over $250.00 a month supply out of my own pocket X 4 years and has up to ten times the risk (over non users) of causing diabetes and severe weight gain.

Zyprexa which is only FDA approved for schizophrenia (.5-1% of pop) and some bipolar (2% pop) and then an even smaller percentage of theses two groups.
So how does Zyprexa get to be the 7th largest drug sale in the world?
Eli Lilly is in deep trouble for using their drug reps to ‘encourage’ doctors to write zyprexa for non-FDA approved ‘off label’ uses.

The drug causes increased diabetes risk, and medicare picks up all the expensive fallout. There are now 7 states (and counting) going after Lilly for fraud and restitution.

Only 9 percent of adult Americans think the pharmaceutical industry can be trusted right around the same rating as big tobacco.

I’m sorry to hear about your problems. Yes I have been aware of the possible problems with Zyprexa and that it was being looked at. You are indeed correct that a drug company promoting a drug for an indication for which it is not approved is illegal and something I think that needs to be examined closer. The problem is, it is considered legal for a docotor to prescribe any drug for any indication they see fit. So I also blame doctors for prescribing prescription drugs for un-approved diseases or ailments. I can see off-label use in the field of cancer and other life threatening diseases since the patients may have no other hope. However,

I’m not sure where you get the 9% figure. I’d be interested to know. The latest survey results I saw 61% of Americans think pharmaceutical companies are doing a good job while 31% think they are doing a bad job.. This is according to Harris Interactive and the results are at http://www.harrisinteractive.com/news/allnewsbydate.asp?NewsID=1051
